Once upon a time from the left

You’re left
                        right at the start beginning

This is the fuck you part
words scars shadows fit
many torn and bloodied boys
hand to hand in the syllables
bayonet and shrapnel
twisted into facts

ammo bandages camouflage
form mangled with content
the long version war takes

as if the past were true
and grinning in a faded Polaroid
teenagers posing johnwayne

meaning in its meat

D.F. Brown was born and raised in the Missouri Ozarks. He served as a combat medic with the First of the Fourteenth Infantry in Vietnam, 1969–1970.
