Two peaches and a butterfly on a stone plinth.
Strawberries and red currents on a marble ledge.
Vanitas still life with skull and hourglass.  In this light
                                                                nothing ever had a name.
You will only listen to the snow in the walls now.
Still life with hanging bunch of grapes, a butterfly.
Still life in a niche.  Still life with fruit
                                                                and a grapevine.  Where
do your eyes go when you listen to the snow and why.
Your signature in someone else’s hand and you like it.
The letter A on a stone plinth.
Still life with hazelnuts.  Still life with asparagus and red
currents.  Still life with shells.

Self-Portrait as Persephone

Marissa Davis

I am afraid of his long man’s body
the way it creeps toward me in the gray
marrow of the night the way
I yearn for it to split me open
like a blade does a soft fruit

this is what my mother warned me about
when I was young & still combed my hair with poplar twigs
& ran barefoot between the rising yellow grains
that looked like sunrays & spun the sunrays into life

The Spider

Didi Jackson

Because it is spring yet has snowed nonstop for two days,
and because the room is warmed
from the baseboard heaters and the gas fireplace,
and because it is a wet snow that pools in the ruts
of our driveway and at the sills of our windows,
a large brown house spider decides to cross our living room,
each of its legs lifting singularly like a tiny torture,
fierce as a Bourgeois sculpture, who was
eighty when she began her dark decent

Channels to Fall Asleep to

While shoe box to shoe box travels my childhood

Professionals roll garbage cans around a conference room
Half the size of a holding tank
Half the hope of a holding tank
Full of third world retail flattery
“nothing wrong with the blind leading the blind,”
                                                                                    we think they just said
